What is the difference between pimples and acne?
Acne is a disorder and inflammation of hair follicles and sebaceous glands while pimples are the lesions produced due to excessive production of sebum when sebaceous glands and hair follicles are inflamed and clogged.
Pimples, pustules, whiteheads and blackheads are the indications of acne. Pimples are most common indication, while pustules are a little severe than pimples.
Causes of Pimples:
The fundamental cause of pimples is acne. For better understating, we have to explain the causes of acne.
Acne is caused by the inflammation of hair follicles and sebaceous glands due to over production of sebum, hormones and immune response to foreign bodies.
It is still unknown why hair follicles narrow, but it is evident that acne is caused by over production of sebum and obstruction in the hair follicles. When excessive sebum is produced, and there is no way to secrete, it ruptures hair follicles and clogs them with dead skin cells. At this stage when sebum is unable to pop out the skin, the bump or lesion is called whitehead. If the sebum pops out the skin, the bump or lesion is called blackheads.
Pimples are the initial stages of whiteheads when sebum ruptures and clog the hair follicles. In other words, pimples are referred to as mild acne.
As pimple is a result of acne, causes of pimples are similar to acne, such as bad immune response, eating spicy foods and hormonal disturbance.
