Lavender Oil for Acne

Acne is defined as a skin condition that can be categorized into primarily three types including acne cysts, acne papules and acne pustules. According to Pamela Archer, the author of ‘The complete guide to Acne’, around 85% of people in America alone suffers from acne. The acne forms when the sebaceous glands begin to produce an excessive amount of oil that blocks the pores of the skin and leaves bacteria to spread within the pores leading to acne formation.

Acne is a recurrent and frequent condition that can develop at any age. The most common treatment for acne includes over the counter medication such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid that works well for mild acne. For severe acne, antibiotics and various other stronger systematic drugs are prescribed for a longer duration of time. The treatments available today for acne are numerous however its effectiveness depends on the type and severity of the condition.

Natural remedies have gained significant popularity since they are considered to be a healthier and risk free solution to improving the skins health and reducing acne.  Lavender is one popular herb used for various skin care, treatments and therapy. It is identified as a plant that grows near the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The lavender oil is produced and well known as an ingredient in skin care, makeup products. The oil is created by distilling the blue purple flowers of the plant. Lavender oil is well known for its fragrance and soothing the skin.  Based on the Journal of Clinical Oncology in 2003 lavender has shown to calm the nerves and reduce stress. Since acne formation is considered to develop due to stress as well, use of lavender oil can not only calm the body the mind but also improve the health of the skin. Another benefit of lavender is that it reduces scarring by creating scar tissues within damaged skin.

The oil can be added to water while bathing, or can be applied directly onto the affected areas after dilution. The oil can also be mixed with one table spoon of olive oil and applied onto the acne. Diluting the oil will help greatly reduce the likelihood of damage to skin.
