Acne is most depressing and irritating skin disorder. It becomes more common day by day. People in any age get it on face, shoulders, arms, legs and on other parts of body. Acne can be mild, moderate and severe. If you don't treat your mild acne then it can change into moderate to severe. Severe acne consists of inflamed cysts and nodules. They usually leave scars behind them.

There are lots of treatments available for treating this type of acne. Besides prescription medications there are other therapies as well. Severe acne needs aggressive kind of treatment because of deep rooted cysts. Oral Antibiotics:

Dermatologists prescribe oral antibiotics first. They consist of doxycline, erythromycin, minocycline and tetracycline. All these drugs work well on severe cystic acne.



In starting they are given in high doses but as time passes the doses reduces as acne starts lessening. They reduces P. acne bacteria which are main cause of severe acne. The problem with these is that they come with severe side effects.

Isotretinion:

Isotretinion is most powerful drug to use to treat severe acne. When all the other drugs stop working on them then dermatologist prescribe it. They are most effective treatment for severe type of acne but it is given under strict monitoring and observation. Due to its severe side effects, dermatologists do not prescribe it to anyone. Its severe side effects include birth defects in unborn fetus. Thats why it is recommended that women do not get pregnant while on this treatment. In fact before starting this treatments women are recommended to do pregnancy test one month before embarking on this treatment. Other side effects include depression and suicidal thoughts. If you feel any one of these side effects, immediately consult your dermatologist. Other milder side effects include severe pain in abdomen and chest, bone and joint pain, severe headache, dizziness, blurred vision, nausea vomiting, and dryness of skin, eyes and nose. These side effects generally disappears when a patient stop this treatment.

Oral contraceptives:

They are very effective for women by controlling their over active sebaceous glands. If other treatments do not work on severe acne then dermatologists prescribe this. It is a long term treatment.

There are treatments available for treating severe acne. It is necessary to consult a good dermatologist to treat this type of acne. If these treatments do not work on your skin then there are other treatment options available as well.
