Witch Hazel for Acne

A recurring skin condition that affects individuals regardless of their age is acne. The types of acne conditions are numerous and therefore the availability of treatments is similarly diverse, the effectiveness varying based on the type and severity of the condition. When the sebaceous glands begin to produce large amounts of oil, it clogs up the pores of the hair follicle causing bacteria to manufacture and induce acne formation.

Often homemade remedies and over the counter medication are used and prescribed to treat mild acne, however it is always favorable to first consult a dermatologist or get sufficient information about the condition before undergoing any kind of self treatment. The reason is that in cases of severe acne, strong medication is deemed effective, these carry many side effects therefore self treatment can be a risky approach.

In the case of mild, going for home remedies for acne might not be a bad idea. It is a cost effective, healthy means to improve the skin condition and carries little risk.   Witch hazel remedy for acne can be used for improving acne. It is identified as a hamamelis viginiana, a plant with oval shaped leaves and yellow colored flowers. This plant has been for a long time to treat skin conditions especially skin irritations and rashes. This remedy is popular for the beneficial properties of its chemicals called tannins that cause a soothing effect against skin irritations and help abate swelling. The products available in the market that contain witch hazel are not rich in tannins therefore the remedy can be quite a useful treatment when the bark of the plant around 5-10 grams are seeped into water and then applied onto the skin. The medication should only be applied on the skin externally; it should not be consumed internally since it contains a high level of toxicity that can be very harmful for the body.

I like to add three drops each of tea tree, eucalyptus and lavender oil to the witch hazel per ounce. These essential oils have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
