Biotin is a type of Vitamin B that is required to perform various functions in the body. Biotin is another name for vitamin B-7 which is not present in the body and need to be obtained by consuming certain food items. Egg yolk and liver is found to be rich in vitamin B-7, some other food items that contain biotin include pork, avocados and salmon. The vitamin is found in smaller amounts in raspberries and cheddar cheese. Usually biotin is not consumed by the body because biotin is easily removed when the food is cooked or stored up over time. According to studies biotin helps improve as well as maintain blood sugar levels. The vitamin also helps the effective use up of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Biotin is essential to convert proteins into enzyme. Within the cellular metabolism it helps act as a coenzyme for five other enzymes within the body. According to scientific studies biotin actually helps reduce skin irritation and different kinds of skin conditions. It also improves growth of nail and hair. Biotin supplements have also shown to increase the thickness of nails.
Acne is a skin condition that develops when the sebaceous glands excrete a large amount of oil that blocks the pores of the skin; leaving room for bacteria to be produced within the pores. This in turn causes acne formation. There is no research conducted that indicate acne development as a result of biotin. In case a person does suspect acne condition getting worse due to biotin consumption it is favorable to consult a doctor who can prescribe the right form of treatment for the condition. It is also advisable to discontinue food containing biotin in such instances.
Regular consumption of raw egg white should be avoided since it attaches biotin to the intestinal tract preventing it from being absorbed by the body. This in turn can cause bowel diseases. it is especially harmful for pregnant females as well as those who consume alcohol regularly.
