More on Severe Acne Condition

Defining severity of acne is difficult; however, it may be defined in several ways. If you have lots of pimples around 15 to 25, it may be severe acne. It can be defined as how deep the blackheads are. Pustules filled with pus and blood may indicate the severity of acne. In this article, we will explain severe acne and their treatments.

There are four types of severe acne which are:

  1. Acne conglobata
  2. Acne fulminans
  3. Nodulocystic acne
  4. Gram-negative folliculitis

Acne conglobata:

A chronic and severe form of acne vulgaris or cystic acne, which is indicated by severe inflammation of sebaceous glands, totally ruptured hair follicle and filled with pus and a red lump. Acne conglobata infects deep in the skin to upper epidermis. Acne conglobata mostly flare up in areas dense with sebaceous glands. When acne cystic remains untreated, it may form abscesses a severe form of acne.

An abscess is indicated with a lump inside epidermis of the skin and remains dormant for a specific period, and gets inflamed rapidly. There are certain medications for the treatment of abscesses but they rarely heal until a surgery is performed to cut out the lump and mixture of pus, bacteria and blood.

Your doctor may prescribe you Isotretinoin, a medicine formulated for the treatment of acne conglobata. Remember; do not stop taking medicine unless you consult your doctor. In case you stop medicines without consultation with your dermatologist, you may get the acne conglobata again. Usually it takes several years to cure acne conglobata; you should be more patient and calm.

Acne fulminans:

When acne conglobata remain untreated or its treatment is stopped before the required period, a sudden onset or attack of acne fulminans occur. The onset usually accompany with fever and joint pains usually in hips and knees.

Acne fulminans is usually treated with corticosteroids and other non-steroid medications. But it may recur, so complete and long term treatment with Isotretinoin is necessary.

Nodulocystic Acne:

Cysts are the lump filled with pus and blood. Nodulocystic acne although rare, but if they flares up, it may be very traumatic and painful. Nodulocystic acne contains one to several cysts of varying diameter.

They are treated in several ways depending upon the severity and response to medications. As a first resort, Isotretinoin and corticosteroids are prescribed with some other antibiotics. After 5 days, if they are as similar as before, they may require drainage of pus and other toxic fluids.

Gram-negative folliculitis:

What is gram-negative folliculitis?

Fist it is necessary to define what the term gram-negative refers to? In laboratory, gram is used as blue stain to identify and detect bacteria. Some bacteria do not stain blue and remain unnoticed and called gram-negative bacteria.

Gram-negative folliculitis is an inflammation of hair follicles caused by gram-negative bacteria found in certain antibiotics.

Most antibiotics are ineffective against gram-negative bacteria, so Isotretinoin and certain other broad-spectrum antibiotics that cover large variety of bacteria are prescribed.
